Abstract

In anatomy laboratories, the traditional use of formalin for preserving cadavers and anatomical specimens has long been essential for hands-on learning and research. However, growing interdisciplinary concerns regarding workplace and environmental safety have prompted a critical need for innovative solutions. This research addresses these challenges by pioneering the development and evaluation of a prototype ventilated dissection table designed to mitigate formaldehyde exposure.

Formaldehyde, a key component in formalin, poses significant health risks, including respiratory and dermatological issues, and is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The prototype ventilated dissection table aims to reduce formaldehyde emissions, thereby amplifying safety measures within anatomy laboratories. Employing a retrospective descriptive study design, the research leverages pilot data to assess the efficacy of the ventilated dissection table under various conditions.

Preliminary findings indicate significant reductions in formaldehyde concentrations (mg/m³) when using the prototype table compared to traditional methods. Notably, under occupational exposure limits, formaldehyde levels decreased approximately 100-fold to well below established safety thresholds. This underscores the table's effectiveness in creating a safer and more health-conscious laboratory environment.

Beyond immediate safety improvements, this study underscores the development of innovative laboratory equipment with broader implications. These include advancements in anatomy education, alignment with regulatory standards, and a commendable stride toward environmental responsibility. By addressing critical safety concerns while enhancing educational practices, the ventilated dissection table represents a significant advancement in the field, poised for adoption across various disciplines and institutions.
